Six Things You Can Do So That Your Exhaust System Produces Less Noise

An overly noisy vehicle exhaust system can be embarrassing. When a vehicle makes too much noise, it appears to be in poor condition. Excessive exhaust noise can also be distracting and even detract from safety if it drowns out other sounds on the road.

Fortunately, there are numerous things that can be done to remedy an overly noisy exhaust system. The following are six things you can do so that your exhaust system produces less noise.

Replace your muffler

The most common reason why a vehicle's exhaust system makes excessive noise is because the muffler is malfunctioning. In this case, replacing the muffler can resolve the problem. Depending on what part of the country you live in, you may be required by law to have a property functioning muffler on your vehicle to be out on the roads.

Fix leaks in your exhaust pipes

You might still be experiencing excessive exhaust noise even though your vehicle's muffler is functioning properly. In this case, leaky exhaust pipes could be the problem. You can have holes in exhaust pipes patched up with epoxy to get rid of excessive noise.

Enhance your muffler

A vehicle's muffler can be made more effective in a variety of ways. One way to improve the performance of a vehicle's muffler is by having a soundproofing material such as fiberglass packing or steel scrubs installed in your muffler. This will help to deaden some of the sounds.

Add a silencer to your muffler

Another way you can make your muffler more effective at reducing sound production is by installing a silencer inside it. A muffler silencer can easily and quickly be slipped into a vehicle via the exhaust pipe. This is a simple and inexpensive way to deal with exhaust noise that requires very little labor.

Put a resonator in your exhaust system

You can add a resonator to your exhaust system to minimize exhaust noise. A resonator is distinct from a muffler in that it works by minimizing the back pressure produced by an engine. This means that a resonator not only minimizes noise but can also improve an engine's performance.

Install soundproofing items on the inside of your vehicle

You can make a vehicle's exhaust system less noisy on the inside of the vehicle by installing various soundproofing materials inside the vehicle's cabin. These materials can include soundproofing mats or spray foam substances that help to seal out sounds.
